The cars seem to have very little sound deadening on the floors, so you hear all sorts of little stones and pebbles bouncing around that you wouldn't necessarily pick up in other cars. In terms of other stuff, my sedan had a persistent rattle coming from just below the FM antenna attachment point. If I knew then what I know now, I would have gone with a 2.0L manual and added the 17" rims and other appearance bits myself. I believe their lifetime average is 23 mpg. My parents get terrible fuel economy, with some all-city tanks dipping as low as 16 mpg. My lifetime average was 22.6 mpg with a 60/40 city/highway split. I liked it very much and would give it top marks in most respects - except fuel economy. I used to have a 2.3L manual sedan and my parents have a 2.3L automatic hatch. Keep your mind open during the search, you may decide on a hatchback and then find a beautiful sedan on pristine condition for a steal. Try to find the best car for the money whether it's a sedan or hatchback. You are buying them used, so I would buy based on condition. So personally I like the sedan, but you really need to look at both of them and drive them, and decide for yourself.Īlso a consideration. I wouldn't assume that it would get any better fuel economy than my 2.3 GT. The hatchback only comes in the 2.3 liter. Keep in mind that the sedan's seat's fold down too and open up the trun into the rear of the car.ģ. I know that it does, but I just can't see where I would use what little extra it has all that much. The sedan has a huge trunk, and when you look into the back of the hatchback it doesn't appear to have much more useable space than the sedan. In most situations I can't see where the hatchback would be that much more usefull than the sedan. I like the Protege 5 much more than the sedan.Ģ. I simply don't like the looks of the hatchback, which is a complete reversal for me from the Protege. I would buy a 2.0 sedan and upgrade the suspension later on.ġ. Not that either one is better, just different. The 2.3 auto that I have is a much more refined car. In my opinion the 2.0 with a 5 speed is a fun little car. You are limited on options for the 2.0 such as wheels and interior. On early models you could only get the 4 speed auto with the 2.0.Ĥ. The thing about buying a 2.0 versus a 2.3 GT is that:ġ. All that stuff is neat, but I don't really need it. The car has tons of features, auto headlights, auto wipers, sun roof, 17" wheels, heated seats, and climate control. I average about 25 to 26 mpg on my daily commute. I have not been very happy with the fuel economy of my 2.3 auto. If I had purchased one new I would have bought the 2.0 5 speed manual. I bought mine from my oldest daughter, so I got stuck with a loaded GT model with leather, 5 speed auto and the 2.3 liter motor.
